Chicago man charged with shooting Aurora cabbie

A 23-year-old Chicago man faces multiple charges, including one for attempted murder, in connection with the shooting of a taxi driver this week in Aurora.

Police said Deonta X. Nabors of the 3700 block of California Avenue is charged with single counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and attempted robbery.

He also is charged with three counts each of attempted armed robbery and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Finally, he faces a misdemeanor charge of obstructing police after authorities said he repeatedly lied to a police officer about his identity during the traffic stop that led to his arrest.

Nabors was being held Thursday on $2 million bail and was expected to be transferred Friday morning to the Kane County Correctional Center in St. Charles.

Police said they responded at 12:11 a.m. Jan. 10 to the 400 block of Grant Street where they found the 49-year-old taxi driver seated in his cab with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police said they believe the taxi driver picked up Nabors a few minutes earlier at a gas station at North and Broadway avenues. When the driver dropped Nabors off, Nabors demanded money and then shot the driver before fleeing.

Sometime during the robbery attempt, the driver accelerated and crashed into an unoccupied SUV.

Nabors was taken into custody around 7:39 p.m. Jan. 10 when police stopped a car in which he was a passenger because the vehicle's registration had expired.

The officer noticed that Nabors resembled the man wanted in the robbery and shooting, authorities said, and asked him for his identification. It took three separate attempts before Nabors gave the officer honest information and was taken into custody.

The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old Joliet man, was given a verbal warning about the status of the vehicle registration.
