'Rogue One' is about to become 2016's top box office draw

“Rogue One” is now on the brink of becoming North America's biggest film of 2016.

And if there were any question as to the financial incentives for years (and years) of spinoff “anthology” “Star Wars” films, all doubt has been removed by what will go down as Disney's biggest domestic release of a year in which the studio had three films top $400 million.

“Rogue One” grossed $21.97 million over the weekend to barely edge “Hidden Figures” ($21.80 million), according to studio estimates Sunday; final numbers are due Monday.

The first “Star Wars” “stand-alone” film, directed by Gareth Edwards, has now grossed $477.3 million domestically — meaning it is poised to surpass Disney's “Finding Dory” ($486.3 million) this week among 2016 releases.

Third on that list is Disney's “Captain America: Civil War” ($408.1 million).

Worldwide, “Rogue One” is now the fifth biggest release of last year, at $914.4 million — as the film was newly buoyed by its $31 million debut in China.

Ultimately, “Rogue One” will become Disney's fourth film of 2016 to top the $1 billion mark. No other studio even had a film top $900 million worldwide.
