D214 students earn top honors at national journalism convention

High School District 214 students recently earned top honors at the annual Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association convention in November.

Fifteen Prospect students received individual recognition, along with two staff awards and a story of the year, which represents the most JEA/NSPA awards in school history for any single convention. They competed against 3,000 students from across the world.

The Prospector, the school's student newspaper, took second place in the Best of Show competition, marking its best finish in program history. The Crest, Prospect's yearbook, took eighth place in the Best of Show competition, marking the first time they have ever placed in this contest.

Prospect senior and Prospector Editor-in-Chief Mike Stanford took first place in the Sports Story of the Year category. This is the first time a member of the Prospector staff has received this honor. Prospect junior Leo Garkisch received a superior rating in Sports Editorial Writing

Hersey High School's student newspaper, The Correspondent, entered its October issue at the November convention in Indianapolis and ranked seventh in the nation in the tabloid style newspapers category.

Hersey senior Kelly McCarthy was one of three students to earn a Superior Rating in Editorial Writing at the JEA write-off contest in November. Only the top 10 percent of participants in the contest can earn this distinction.

Hersey senior Sneh Pandya was one of two students who received a Superior Rating in Portrait Photography at the JEA write-off contest. This is the first time a student from Hersey has earned a superior rating in a photography contest.

Rolling Meadows High School sophomore Grace Dollia was one of only six students to earn a Superior Rating in the JEA's News Writing competition, the highest award that can be given. This was Grace's first time entering the JEA write-off competition.

Rolling Meadows senior Sahil Shah was one of only two students to earn a Superior rating for Sports Writing. This is the second consecutive year Sahil has competed in and earned a Superior award in this category.
