Cook County jail inmate charged with attacking guard

A Cook County Jail inmate, Jamara Rhone, has been charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer after injuring a correctional deputy earlier this week, the Cook County sheriff said Friday in a news release.

When the correctional deputy approached Rhone, 40, on Monday, Jan. 2, to open his cell for lock-up, the inmate slammed the deputies' head against the steel door, the release said.

When the deputy attempted to walk away, surveillance footage shows Rhone, who was in jail on a retail theft charge, following and continuing to strike him, the release said. Inmates attempted to restrain the attacker until additional staff arrived.

The deputy was taken to the hospital for treatment.
