Images: Lake County monthly photo contest winners for 2016

These are our 12 monthly photo contest winners for 2016.

Each week, our photo staff picks three finalists in the contest, whose photos run in Sunday Neighbor. Then one of those is chosen for the monthly winner, and receives a coupon for $100 in free framing from Posterworks, 1468 Townline Road, Mundelein.

If you'd like to participate in this year's competition, read the rules in Sunday's Neighbor section and send submissions to yourimages@dailyherald.com.

Charisma keeps an eye on the morning's snowfall in Grayslake on March 2. We were intrigued with the close-up of the horse's eyes. We also liked the dynamics of the white fence reflected in the eyes and the detail in the hair. Kelley Dorner of Grayslake
A bee walks around on a yellow petal that had fallen inside a morning glory blossom in a Gurnee garden on Aug. 4. We were struck by the beauty of the colors surrounding the bee walking deep within the flower. The detail of the face of the bee is surreal and produces a disturbing effect. Nicole DIcop-Hineline of Gurnee
Four swans swim on a beautiful morning with fog and fall colors providing a backdrop during their migration on Oct. 25, 2015, in Grayslake. The picture was very well done with the floating fog in the background creating multiple layers and the swans standing out on the deep blue lake in the foreground. Everything came together with the geese posed in the background and the tall marsh standing far behind. Kelley Dorner of Grayslake
A robin shivers on a snowy bush outside a Hawthorn Woods window on Jan. 10. The picture of the robin made us cold. Shooting through the glass created an unusual effect that added to the emphasis on the bird huddled on the snowy branches. Don Bielinski of Hawthorn Woods
Two giraffes cross the Serengeti plains in Tanzania in August 2015. The picture was well composed and the lines were interesting and dynamic as the two made their way to the lone tree on the horizon. Tom Kreuser of Libertyville
A dazzling desert sunset in the Saguaro National Park West in Tucson, Arizona, in February. The silhouette of the desert and the burnt orange sky was dramatic. The shapes of the cactus and the composition of the hills and the clouds made for a wonderful picture. Nancy Giardina of Libertyville
The Yaquina Head Light along the Oregon coastline last summer. A simple, serene picture perfect for the summer season. The gulls are just the touch to add interest to the coastal scene. Mike Gilligan of Hawthorn Woods
A peaceful moment as the sun rises over the lake at Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville on April 17. There is a beautiful tonal quality in the picture of the boat in the still water. The composition is subtle and simple, creating a nice elegance to the overall image. Nicole Dicop-Hineline of Gurnee
The Merced River glistens in the foreground with the mountains majestically rising in the background at Yosemite National Park, California, on Oct. 23. This is known as the "Gateway to Yosemite." The image is gorgeous, with beautiful colors and detail. The photographer captured the scene from a great angle and was lucky to have billowy clouds and still water. Michael Stone of Round Lake Beach
A storm moves in over the lake at Hastings Lake Forest Preserve. This was a beautiful landscape, with wonderful skies and still waters. The photographer placed the purple flowers in the foreground, giving the whole image depth. John Knol of Lindenhurst
A couple of geese watch a beautiful sunset. The geese sticking their heads up in the sunset made us take pause. It was quirky and unusual to see the silhouette of the two and we had to chuckle. Cindy Spudich of Lake Zurich
