District 73 spreads joy throughout the community

Students, staff and parents across Hawthorn District 73 schools were busy last month brightening the holidays of area Vernon Hills residents.
Elementary North fifth-grade band students trekked through the snow with their instruments to perform a holiday concert for residents of the Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes retirement home.
The combined efforts of students, staff and parents at Hawthorn District 73's Townline and Dual Language Schools resulted in doubling the building's food donation to Sharing Hands Food Pantry in Vernon Hills. The schools collected about 3,600 food products this season.
About 150 students, parents and staff from the Hawthorn schools volunteered at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville. They packed 181 boxes, which accounted for just over 39,000 meals or enough food so 107 children will have food for a year.
Aspen staff and parents donated about 100 gifts for local families who had fallen on hard times during the holiday season. Families were given gifts of need like pajamas and coats, and gifts of want like toy dinosaurs, monster trucks and art sets. Parents and staff also stocked food supplies to feed students during the day who may come to school without having eaten.
The Hawthorn district office staff adopted families in need during the holidays. They worked hard to provide gifts to ensure families have a more joyous holiday season.
