Girls gymnastics: Barton, Kamysz help Hersey to Candy Cane victory

There were some sweet results in the Michael Meyer Memorial Candy Cane Invite at Hersey on Saturday - especially for the girls gymnastics team of the host Huskies.

Floor exercise was an especially tasty outcome, as Maggie Barton scored 9.25 to win the event, and teammate Mackenzie Kamysz placed second with 9.20.

Those performances helped lift Hersey to a 140.031 score and a victory in the final team standings.

Maine South (139.675) placed second, followed by Mundelein (134.5) and Buffalo Grove (128.8).

Mundelein's Taylor Shanahan won the all-around with an average of 9.3375. She came up with the top effort on uneven bars (9.35), balance beam (9.55).

Glenbard North's Erin Bregman was the vault champion at 9.40, just ahead of Shanahan (9.35).

Barton was second in the all-around (9.05), with Kamysz third (9.0375) and Bregman fourth (9.0188). Hersey's Allie Heidrich placed sixth (8.5828).

Libertyville's top finisher was Kyle Skie, who placed sixth on the beam (9.15).

Addison Trail's Kennedy O'Neill was fifth on beam at 9.16.
