Google Now Letting People Rate TV Shows, Movies From Search

Now when you search for a TV show or movie on Google, you'll not only be able to see how it's rated, you'll be able to rate it yourself.

Search Engine Land reports that Google has confirmed it is currently testing a way for people to rate movies and TV shows right from their search results. When you search for HBO's Westworld or Game of Thrones, for instance, you'll see an option in the right-hand column to give the show a thumbs up or down. Under that you'll still see ratings from other places like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

Google did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment, though a spokesperson for the search company told Search Engine Land: "We're currently experimenting with the feature but have nothing to announce at this time." There's no word as to how Google plans to use the data it's collecting, or whether the company plans to incorporate it into Google Play Movies & TV.

Regardless of its motives, Google is giving some new competition to services like Fandango's Rotten Tomatoes and Amazon's Metacritic.

Meanwhile, Google this week became the latest major streaming video provider to adopt 4K Ultra HD resolution, adding more than 125 4K movies to its Google Play online library.

US and Canadian customers can now buy 4K movies and stream them on Chromecast Ultra, a Sony Bravia Android TV, or a Xiaomi Mi Box 3. In addition to the new 4K movies, Google is also bringing the entire Google Play library to its Daydream virtual reality platform.
