Buffalo Grove, Hersey team up for Chobanov

Buffalo Grove's boys swimming team topped Hersey 114-72 in a Mid-Suburban East dual meet Thursday, but the real winner was Tony Chobanov.

The teams combined to raise more than $700 for Chobanov, veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq who is in need of support, through A Soldier's Journey Home. A check will be presented to him next Friday in an all-school assembly, and the dollars will help finish Chobanov's Naperville home.

In the pool on Thursday, Buffalo Grove was able to win all three relays.

Mark Poirier claimed individual wins in the 50-yard freestyle (22.96) and the 100 fly (56.97), and Daniel Verdico won the 200 free (1:53.28) and the 500 free (5:08.53). Other Bison winners included Jack Delattre in diving (260.90) and Kenny Velu in the 100 back (1:03.43).

Hersey was without junior standout Michael Petro, who is competing in national-level meet. The Huskies had wins from Daniel Pollina (200 IM), Jack Blumenfeld (100 free) and Spencer Burkhalter (100 breast).

Fremd d. Palatine: The Vikings stayed perfect in duals after a 108-74 victory over the Pirates in Mid-Suburban West action.

Individual winners for the Vikes were Nick Seroni (200 free), Nick Nevins (50 free), Zach Mega (diving), Danny Konishi (100 free) and Paul Ponte (500 free).

Palatine's Alex Bartosik won the 100 fly and the 100 back, and Sean O'Brien finished first in the 200 IM.
