Emanuel's transparency policy makes it into McDonald trial
CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's pledge to bring new transparency to the police force has made it into a courtroom where an officer is charged with murder in the shooting death of black teenager Laquan McDonald.
In a Thursday hearing, Cook County Circuit Judge Vincent Gaughan asked a city attorney if her request to keep tens of thousands of emails private undermines Emanuel's policy to more quickly release videos and other materials in police shootings.
Assistant Corporation Counsel Lisette Mojica said these particular emails from the police department and the agency that investigates police shootings are irrelevant to the case against Officer Jason Van Dyke and are protected by attorney-client privilege.
Gaughan later said a tentative agreement had been reached over the emails but he wouldn't say what had been decided.
