Mitchell fastest to 2,000 as No. 12 Ohio State women roll
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Kelsey Mitchell scored 23 points, becoming the fastest player in NCAA women's basketball history to reach 2,000 points, and No. 12 Ohio State cruised to a 108-73 win over Southern on Wednesday night.
Mitchell, who has played in 79 games, became the seventh Buckeye to reach the milestone with a pair of free throws with 3:54 to play. She passed Missouri State's Jackie Stiles, who got there in 82 games.
Mitchell is tied for eighth fastest in reaching 1,000 points, getting there in 41 games.
Freshman Tori McCoy came off the bench, hit all 10 of her shots and scored a career-high 25 points for the Buckeyes (7-3). It tied the program record for most makes in a game without a miss.
Shayla Cooper added 19 points and Sierra Calhoun had 13 with career highs of eight rebounds and three blocks. Mitchell, who was 9 of 10 from the line, also matched her career high of eight assists as Ohio State had a season-best 26 helpers on 36 made field goals.
The Buckeyes made 12 of 17 shots, including all three 3-pointers, to lead 33-13 after one quarter - for the most points they've scored in a quarter this season. They finished the game at a season-high 61 percent.
Southern (2-3) was led by Skylar O'Bear with 19 points.
