WW South becoming known for winning

In the first three weeks of the season, Wheaton Warrenville South's boys basketball team shifted quickly from unknown to scary.

The Tigers stayed unbeaten with Wednesday's 50-24 DuPage Valley Conference victory over visiting Lake Park in a win that showcased brilliance on both ends of the court.

While the rest of the conference knew the talent coming up through WW South's program, now everyone's getting a look at it through the lens of the Tigers' 6-0 start. They're 2-0 in the DVC with fellow league unbeatens Glenbard North and Naperville North coming up next.

"The focus is just to win every night and just play as hard as we can," said Tigers senior guard Drew Healy. "We're not focused on winning conference. We're focused on the little goals of winning each game."

WW South set the tone by scoring the game's first 12 points. It took six-plus minutes for the Lancers (3-3, 1-1) to tally on Garrett Fant's jumper, and that drought wouldn't be the last.

The Tigers also held Lake Park scoreless for the first four minutes of the third quarter and for four minutes in the fourth quarter. Only Fant, Diamante Smith - playing his first action of the season since coming back from injury - and Andrew Vega scored for the Lancers in the first three quarters.

"We're just not a very good team right now, and they are," said Lancers coach Josh Virostko. "We need to get better, but they've got to want to do it."

Everyone in the Tigers' eight-man rotation scored, and 11 players scored overall. They committed 6 turnovers through three quarters, compared to 19 for the Lancers. WW South shot 15 of 26 from the field in three quarters while Lake Park attempted only 16 field goals in that span.

Jake Healy led the Tigers' balanced effort with 11 points, while Dillon Durrett had 8 points, Chase Stebbins 7 points and Drew Healy 6 points.

"These guys are pretty unselfish kids," said Tigers coach Mike Healy. "They're not really into who's scoring. They trust each other. They've been real easy to coach so far in terms of their effort and focus."
