Montini wallops Trinity

Nobody had to remind Montini what happened the last time the Broncos played a girls basketball game against Trinity.

The Broncos avenged last February's 60-53 Class 4A supersectional loss to Trinity with a 66-39 GCAC Red victory Tuesday in Lombard.

"We've been waiting for this one," Montini senior point guard Claudia Kunzer said. "I've been waiting for this, this whole team wanted to get this win just for us. It was just a good win. We needed this win."

Unlike last season's game, this one was never close.

The Broncos (9-0, 1-0) scored the first six points of the game and took a 10-2 lead on sophomore Zoe Zacker's 4-point play. Senior Kaylee Bambule's 3-pointer with 3:32 to play in the first quarter put the lead in double figures for good at 13-2. That was immediately followed by another Bambule 3 and a Sam Mitchell 3, and just like that the Broncos led 19-2.

"I think we looked good," Montini coach Jason Nichols said. "We're doing a lot of things. We play fast, we play hard. I like some of the stuff that we're doing, but there are things we're not doing yet that we know we need to get better at. ... Everybody that is playing basketball, at this point in the season is saying the same thing."

The blowout didn't surprise the Broncos.

"We've been working up to this game a lot," said Kunzer, who finished with 7 assists and 5 rebounds. "We wanted redemption from last year. ... We wanted to show them that we were still a team. That we wanted to fight and win."

The onslaught continued in the second quarter, and by halftime Montini led 38-13. The margin peaked at 31 points in the second half.

Bambule finished with 14 points and Mitchell added 13 off the bench. Lindsey Jarosinski added 11 points in the low post, and Aaliyah Patty had 10 points plus 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. The Broncos finished the game shoot 50 percent, 46 percent from 3-point range.

"It feels really good. I have to say we all came out with more fight than ever," Kunzer said.

The schedule gets even tougher for Montini. The Broncos, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A by The Associated Press, host No. 3 Rock Island at 3 p.m. Saturday.
