Objection filed to candidate for North Aurora president

Ben Popp's candidacy for North Aurora village president has been challenged.

North Aurora resident Arthur Velasquez filed an objection to Popp's election petition Monday, according to village attorney Kevin Drendel.

Drendel and Village Clerk Lori Murray said Monday night that they had not seen a copy of the objection, so they could not say on what grounds Velazquez is objecting.

Popp and Velasquez could not be reached for comment Monday evening.

An electoral board consisting of Murray and trustees Mark Guethle and Chris Faber will be convened within the next week to rule on the objection.

Popp's petition contained 15 signatures. A minimum of nine were required. Of the 15 signatures, six were from people who don't live in North Aurora.

Velasquez is the Batavia Township Precinct 12 Democratic committeeman. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for Kane County Board District 2 in 2012 and is listed as president of Council 5218 of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Popp is running against President Dale Berman. Berman is seeking his third consecutive term as president and fourth term overall.
