Hammond to spend about $1 million more on street lights

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - Hammond officials say the city expects to spend about $1 million on installing decorative lighting along various streets in the coming months to make them safer.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports (http://bit.ly/2gWtWL1 ) nearly $1.5 million in decorative lighting already has been installed on dozens of other streets this year.

The city's engineering staff coordinates on the lighting upgrades with council members, who are allotted a certain amount of casino money for projects in their districts.

Police Chief John Doughty said there's a direct correlation between lighting and crime.
