Champaign man gets 45 years in 2012 bystander shooting

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A Champaign man convicted for a second time of murder in the shooting death of a 20-year-old bystander four years ago has been sentenced to 45-years in prison.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/2gWTIOI ) the sentence Judge Tom Difanis gave 24-year-old Anthony Meads on Friday was five years less than the sentence handed down three years ago for the death of Desirae Austin of Champaign, who was killed by a stray bullet.

Meads was given a new trial after an appeals court ruled he did not get a fair trial in 2013.

Although Meads did not fire the fatal shot, prosecutors said he was involved in a mob action during the shooting.

Meads rejected an offer to plead guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm for 15 years in prison.
