Huntley dominates Dundee-Crown

Dominance.

With 8 pins accounting for 48 points, Huntley steamrollered Dundee-Crown 61-15 in Fox Valley Conference wrestling action in Huntley Thursday night. It was the Fox Valley Conference opener for the Red Raiders.

"Dundee-Crown is a very young team so our plan tonight was to get pins and dominate," said Huntley coach B.J. Bertelsman. "We have better athletes and Dundee-Crown is regrowing their program. We wrestled efficient and got after it. We didn't leave any doubt who would win this match, We have very good technique throughout our entire lineup."

The Red Raiders' quickest pin of the night came courtesy of 126-pounder Zach Spencer, who dispensed of Dundee-Crown's Brandon Rico in 38 seconds.

"Coach Bertelsman wanted us to go for quick pins tonight," said Zach Spencer. "I came out aggressive and got in a good position to get a pin."

Other pins recorded by the Red Raiders (6-1, 1-0) included Sam Spencer (113), Josh Stenger (120). Joey Armijo (132), Luke Loprieno (138), Nik Wise (195), Jacob Catini (220) and Christian Benetiz (285).

Huntley's Jason Pawlak (145) won by major decision by blanking Dundee-Crown's Weston Leith 10-0.

Pete Murray (170) picked up a 7-2 win over D-C's Nick Diaz as Huntley won 11 of 14 matches.

Freshman David Ferrante, who wrestles at 152, claimed a win by forfeit.

"We are wrestling a lot of freshmen and sophomores," said Bertelsman. "They are learning how to wrestle at the varsity level."

The visiting Chargers tallied 3 wins on the night.

Ricky Zambrano (106) recorded the Chargers' (3-4, 1-1) first points of the night winning by a 6-2 decision over Huntley's Cam Olivera.

"Ricky wrestled very well at the Antioch tournament and followed it up with a good effort tonight," said Dundee-Crown coach Tim Hayes. "He had a very good week."

Other than Zambrano's win, Conor Nolan (160) pinned Huntley's Brad Zbilski at the 3:30 mark while Chase Raap (182) pinned Huntley's Mike Jernigan at 3:53.

"Both Conor and Chase can and will wrestle better," said Hayes. "They made the right move when they had to and got the pin. Huntley has a great program because they have great coaches and great feeder programs. We are wrestling a lot of freshmen and sophomores and right now we have a very young lineup. We had absolutely no team unity last season. This year I like that we are cohesive and the kids enjoy being with each other."
