Part of Galesburg mall to be demolished, replaced

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) - Parts of a Galesburg shopping mall are being demolished to make room for new buildings that could include restaurants, a hotel and an entertainment venue.

The Register-Mail reports (http://bit.ly/2gdknK9 ) demolition is set to begin at Sandburg Mall in the spring.

The mall's anchor stores - Bergner's and JCPenney - will remain, but other retailers will have to relocate.

Tom Morris is a Texas real estate investor who's working with the mall's new owner. He says the heart of the mall will be torn down, and the smaller stores in the mall will likely be gone by March.

Morris says he's hopeful some of those tenants will return once the new building is complete.
