Schaumburg Library's 'Food for Fines' begins

The annual holiday "Food for Fines" program will run through Saturday, Dec. 31, at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. It will also take place at the library's Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park branches.

Library users are welcome to pay their fines by bringing in canned or boxed nonperishable food items, which will be donated to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry. Each donated item will take off 50 cents from library fines, with a limit of 10 items per visit.

Expired food will not be accepted, and food donations will not be accepted for lost or damaged items or collection agency fines.

"'Food for Fines' is a win-win for everyone," said Kathy Morgan, director of circulation services for the library. "You reduce your fines and help out someone else who uses the food pantry. A great way to get a great result."

According to the food pantry, some of the best items to donate are canned meats, canned pasta, canned soup, juice, snacks and crackers, baking items, tomato products, paper goods and hygiene products.
