Officials: College of Lake County sustainability efforts showing results

College of Lake County's sustainability efforts are playing off, officials say. Sean Hogan, executive director of institutional effectiveness, planning and research, said the college has saved about $235,260 by reducing energy use by 10 percent during the past five years due to sustainability initiatives. Greenhouse gas emissions were reduced 17 percent or 825 metric tons by using solar panels to warm water, a geothermal heating and cooling system and high efficiency electrical fixtures. CLC received a $140,000 grant from Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to add bioswales, which are landscaping features in parking lots, to reduce erosion and manage the flow of stormwater and snow run off into Willow Lake on the Grayslake campus.
