District 214 proposes 2.23 percent levy increase

Northwest Suburban High School District 214 is proposing a 2.23 percent property tax levy increase for 2016.

Officials say the levy estimate will allow the district to capture the value of new property, such as the Salvation Army property in Des Plaines that is coming back onto the tax rolls after being purchased by a German pharmaceutical company.

Under state law, taxing bodies are limited to levying for new property plus the rate of inflation, which was 0.7 percent in 2015.

The school board is expected to give final approval Dec. 8.
