Beware that angels are all around us

"For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways."

- Psalm 91:11 (NIV)

Last year for Christmas my grandson gave me a beautiful, four-foot angel doll wearing a lovely burgundy and gold dress to place on display. One of my favorite things about Christmas is the display of manger scenes and heavenly angels.

Some people don't believe in angels: they think they were just created for TV, books and movies.

Others have ideas of angels that are unbiblical or full of fantasy. However, world evangelist Billy Graham refers to them as "God's secret agents."

Angel encounters are woven throughout the pages of the Bible. It warns us that we need to beware because we may entertain a stranger that is actually an angel. Some people may have left us wondering if we had been in the presence of an angel by their acts of kindness toward us.

Just recently, a friend informed me of such a time. She explained that her heart was burdened with concern as she struggled to carry a couple of heavy suitcases up a hill to a hospital where her ill family member was in serious condition.

As she wrestled with the weight of the bags, a man came out of nowhere and asked if he could help her carry them. She declined his offer. However, he continued to talk with her as she carried the bags. To her surprise, she made it up the hill quickly, without having an asthma attack.

When she turned to thank the man for his offer, he was nowhere in sight. She believes she entertained an angel.

This time of the year, the Yuletide carols of Christmas marvel in the splendor of these spirit beings. The lyrics rejoice in the fact that angels had been sent to earth with a special mission in mind to proclaim the good news about the birth of Christ, who came to reconcile us to God from sin.

Although we enjoy the thought of their help in our lives, proclaiming the good news of Jesus' birth was the most important mission for heaven's secret agents.
