Madison County man gets 30 years in prison in slaying of boy

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A Madison County man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in the slaying of his fiancé's son on the on the boy's fifth birthday over three years ago.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/2f8pUgH ) reports 27-year-old Tavon Ludy received the sentence in Madison County Circuit Court on Thursday. A jury convicted Ludy of first-degree murder and aggravated battery of a child in September.

Authorities say Ludy punched Torian Whitaker in the chest on Sept. 29, 2013, while his mother was out buying a birthday gift for the boy. Testimony during the jury trial revealed Ludy waited 10 minutes to call 911 while he texted Torian's mother as the boy lay on the floor.

Torian's older brother, Zajamin, was found with bruises on his body on the day of the incident.
