Fremd, Rolling Meadows start with tournament wins

Two girls basketball teams which gave the Mid-Suburban League the Class 4A state runner-up trophy over the last fours years opened their seasons with road victories on Wednesday night in the Lake Zurich Turkey Thriller.

Coach Dave Yates' Fremd Vikings, the 4A runner-up to Benet the last two years, posted a 60-42 win at Johnsburg.

Ryan Kirkorsky's Rolling Meadows Mustangs, the 4A runner-up to Marian Catholic and Whitney Young in 2013 and 2014 respectively, got underway with a 49-35 triumph at Cary-Grove.

Fremd was led by Harvard-bound Grace Tworek who scored a game-high 20 points with 14 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 assists.

Also reaching double figures for the four-time defending MSL champs were Hayley Williams (12 points, 4 assists, 4 steals) and Emily Klaczek (10 points, 3 assists, 2 steals).

Midori Williams added 7 and Missy Adrian chipped in 5 with 9 rebounds for Fremd, which resumes tourney play on Friday night when it hosts Deerfield at 7:30 p.m.

Rolling Meadows 49, Cary-Grove 35: The Mustangs started out the season by winning their first game of the Lake Zurich Turkey Thriller as junior senior forward Morgan Campagna led the way with 14 points.

Senior forward Katherine Nolan and junior guard Melissa Spiwak each added 9 points for the Mustangs, who host Johnsburg today at 7:30 p.m. as the Turkey Thriller continues.

Meadows trailed 15-13 after one quarter but outscored the Trojans 13-4 in the second quarter.

Nolan, Kelsey Nallon, Lily Greifenstein and Kyra Spiwak each hit a 3-pointer for Meadows.

"Katherine Nolan and Morgan Campagna were solid on both ends of the floor," Kirkorsky said. "Clare Preissing gave us a big lift on the defensive end in the fourth quarter."
