Volleyball: Buchmann quickly sets up Missouri-St. Louis

She's only a freshman but setter Kendall Buchmann is already making her mark for the Missouri-St. Louis women's volleyball team.

Last week, the Grayslake North graduate recorded her fifth double-double, including her third in the last four matches, with 17 assists and 10 digs in a 14-25, 25-22, 25-20, 26-24 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Drury.

It was the fifth straight win for the Tritons, who ended their regular season with an 18-11 record.

The 18 wins are St. Louis' most since the 2011 team went 19-10. The Tritons were 12-6 in the GLVC and begin conference tournament play on Friday.

Wrestling

Warren senior Andrew Demos signed his National Letter of Intent to wrestle for the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Last year, UNK was ranked No. 3 in Division II for wrestling.

Demos is a three-time All American and recently placed third at the Journeymen Classic in New York and first at Conflict at Carver at the University of Iowa. He is now wrestling at the 195 weight class.

Football

University of North Dakota tight end Luke Mathewson was one of 14 players honored in a special pregame ceremony for senior day when the Fighting Hawks won their sixth straight game in a 38-31 victory over Northern Arizona.

Mathewson, a Libertyville grad who is also a team captain, scored a touchdown the previous week against Northern Colorado. He has started in eight games this fall.

The No 12 ranked Fighting Hawks trailed 31-10 midway through the third quarter before scoring 28 unanswered points to finish off Big Sky play with a perfect 8-0 record (9-2 overall).

• Washington University sophomore linebacker Jake Coon (Barrington) had 12 tackles, 2 for loss, an interception and a sack in a 43-34 win over the University of Chicago.

Coon upped his team-leading tackle total to 100.

• Washington freshman punter Johnny Davidson (Barrington) was 6 for 269 yards, averaging 44.8 yards per punt against the University of Chicago. He also booted his longest punt (58 yards) of the season.

Women's tennis

Augustana seniors Lauren Goggin and Dana Goggin, who are Buffalo Grove graduates, were two of three Vikings honored as all-conference members in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Lauren was named first team for the fourth straight year while Dana was also named second team all-conference and has been all-conference all four years.

Lauren was named the CCIW Player of the Year after she won the No. 1 singles title with a 7-6, 6-4 win over No. 1 Katie Park of Wheaton.

Lauren was the No. 3 seed entering the tournament but won three straight matches to take the title.

She is the second Augustana player to win the CCIW honor, joining Kim Sawyer, who won the award in 2012 and 2013. Lauren is the fifth No. 1 singles champion in Viking history.

Rugby

The Arlington Stallions Rugby Club will hold its Signup Day for the 2017 competitive season on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at Camelot Park in Arlington Heights at 1005 E. Suffield Drive.

The Stallions offer competitive sides for boys from grades five through 12.

No previous experience in rugby is necessary for a positive and challenging experience.

The club, formed in 2005, won the Illinois middle school state championship in 2013 and high school state championships in 2014 and 2015. Stallions alumni have earned Illinois all-state and all-American honors and are currently playing at Charleston, Purdue, Davenport, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Colorado, St. Mary's (Ca.) and Ohio State universities.
