Indianapolis girl, 4, shoots self, mother with handgun

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis police say a 4-year-old girl shot herself and her mother with a handgun she apparently found inside the family's home.

The girl's father told officers Sunday morning that he and his fiance were awakened by the sound of a gunshot. He said his daughter had shot herself in the face, and officers believe the same bullet struck the man's fiance in the back of the head.

Other children inside the home were not injured in the shooting.

The wounded girl was listed in stable condition Sunday afternoon at Riley Hospital and her mother was in surgery at IU Health Methodist Hospital.

Detectives found a handgun in the home and were investigating the events leading up to the shooting.
