Living room lags behind rest of house

My husband, Ernest, and I have lived in our house for 30 years. We still have the same furniture and decor in the living room that we had when we first moved in. Anytime our children and grandchildren - or anybody for that matter - comes over, the living room stands out like a sore thumb.

We always get told we need to update it. We have renovated our kitchen and bathroom within the past decade. However, our living room is the only area in our house that doesn't fit.

Now that we are great-grandparents, it would be great if we could finally get our living room, which we have dreamed about. This year will be our great-granddaughter's first holidays and we would love to have her in our home and our new living room. Please help us make our home complete.

Budget: $3,000

This room has a beautiful, large window that is the perfect place for a Christmas tree. The warm glow of the tree lights can be enjoyed from both inside the room, as well as outside. The side table is a great spot to create a fun holiday table piece.

Suggestions:

• We have chosen the Twinkling Tannenbaum pre-lit tree for this room. The tree is nostalgic, unique and stunning. It is multicolored and features two unique lighting types: larger, more traditional c7 bulbs, and commercial-grade mini lights. We've also included twinkle bulbs that you can insert into the existing mini-light strands to create a subtle twinkle effect.

• The theme for the tree is "Old Fashioned Fun" to bring a smile to the multigenerational family. A whimsical theme with a classic red and gold color combination is featured. A Limited Edition Karen Didion Vintage Santa with Sled, combined with red ornaments and vintage pictures, as well as red poinsettias with gold edging, red velvet leaves and traditional holly, are all part of the decor.

• For the side table, a red lantern is used to create the Christmas vignette. A "Santa's Workshop" elf is seated in a lantern and evergreen picks are bundled with plaid and "Believe" ribbons and placed on each side of the lantern.

• Finally, a needlepoint penguin pillow is sure to please.
