Student charged with threatening Hinsdale South released from detention facility

The Hinsdale South student accused of threatening to target fellow students in a violent attack has been released from custody and now will be held on home detention in his mother's Darien home.

DuPage County Judge Michael Wolfe said Friday that the 16-year-old has been a "model detainee" and has kept "exceptional grades" during the 31 days he was held at the juvenile justice detention facility.

As a condition of being released on home detention, the teen will be fitted for a GPS device, is banned from owning any weapons and is prohibited from entering the Hinsdale South High School campus.

He is also prohibited from using any social media and from contacting four other individuals who are part of the investigation.

The teen has been detained since a student came forward last month to alert authorities after the boy posted a specific threat against a student on Snapchat and made reference to the "Hinsdale Southocaust."

The teen is charged with possession of an explosive or incendiary device, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of firearms without a FOID card and disorderly conduct.

A search of the home the teen shares with his mother and grandparents turned up what Darien Police Chief Greg Thomas has called an "incredible amount" of guns, ammunition, explosive devices, brass knuckles, knives, ski masks and Nazi memorabilia.

"We're going to keep a very close watch on the situation and the conditions I've set in place," Wolfe told the teen,

Hinsdale High School District 86 Superintendent Bruce Law said after the hearing that district officials need to discuss the ruling with their attorneys.

"We need to understand his status as a student so we can react appropriately," Law said. "As long as he is in custody, we cannot start our student disciplinary proceedings. We need to see if his home detention status means he is still in custody."

The teen's next court date is Nov. 10.
