Softball: Wilhelm returns to coaching - at Stevenson

Perry Wilhelm, who led Mundelein's softball program to two state finals appearances, has been named the new head softball coach at Stevenson.

He replaces Stevenson graduate Alex Vikartofsky, who departed after two seasons.

Wilhelm guided Mundelein's softball program from 1989-96, leading the Mustangs to a 209-41 record, 7 regional championships, 6 North Suburban Conference titles, 2 sectional crowns and 2 trips downstate. Mundelein finished third in Class AA in 1994 and also qualified for the AA finals in 1996.

"It is with great pleasure that we welcome Coach Wilhelm to our staff at Stevenson," Patriots athletic director Trish Betthauser. "He not only brings a wealth of softball knowledge and experience to the position, but he is incredibly passionate about education-based athletics and what it has to offer for young adults."

Wilhelm, a 1976 graduate of Mundelein, coached softball, basketball, football, soccer and tennis during his tenure at MHS. He earned 10 regional titles in girls basketball, softball and boys basketball. Wilhelm spent almost all of his 30-year career at Mundelein before retiring in June.

He served as a teacher, dean of students, and for the final 10 years, athletic director. He was named Division 2 athletic director of the year by the Illinois Athletic Directors Association in 2013. Wilhelm was inducted into the Lake County High Schools Sports Hall of Fame earlier this year.

He also had a brief run as athletic director at Grant. His son Brett serves as Mundelein's head softball coach.
