Round Lake Middle School students to go to college

Round Lake Unit District 116 submission

All 320 sixth-graders from Round Lake Middle School will visit College of Lake County in Grayslake for a science, technology, mathematics and engineering program.

The students are slated to visit CLC on Friday, Nov. 4.

"This is the second consecutive year for this program," said Daniel Roldan, a science and social studies teacher at Round Lake Middle. "Last year's program was so successful, we knew that we had to open this opportunity up to all sixth grade students. Therefore, we doubled the attendance and will be exposing 320 students to the fields offered within STEM."

Students will be placed into teams and rotate through a variety of programs, all offering hands-on learning experiences for them. Some of the 15 programs to be highlighted include biology, nursing, robotics, geology and automotive

"The College of Lake County is pleased to be offering this learning experience for students of Round Lake Middle School. A group of dedicated professors will be providing presentations and demonstrations in their area of expertise. The time they are devoting to this program is all on a volunteer basis. We greatly appreciate the devotion they have for their field and also to assisting young people in developing a plan for their future," said Christian Roldan-Johnson, an associate dean at CLC.

District 116 this year opened a renovated Round Lake High School, which offers courses supporting engineering.
