Iowa woman gets 33 months for defrauding Illinois couple

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A Cedar Rapids woman has been sent to federal prison for defrauding an elderly Illinois woman and her husband out of more than $100,000.

Prosecutors say 37-year-old Tea Ware was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids to 33 months in prison and ordered to pay $108,100 in restitution.

Ware pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to two counts of mail fraud and one count of using a fictitious name.

Ware admitted that from September 2015 through February 2016 she would call the woman and falsely tell her that she had won a lottery or sweepstakes and would receive a large sum of money.

The woman was told she could claim her winnings only if she mailed Ware money for taxes or fees.
