Cleveland strikes first in World Series

Indians starting pitcher Corey Kluber handcuffed the Cubs through 6-plus innings and got relief help from tough lefty Andrew Miller as Cleveland took Game 1 of the World Series 6-0 at Progressive Field last night. Kluber came out firing, striking out eight Cubs through his first 3 innings pitched, setting an Indians record that quickly for strikeouts in a World Series game. Emotional return for Schwarber

There was no masking how much Tuesday and Game 1 of the World Series meant to Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber had not played in a major-league game since the first week of April, when he suffered a serious knee injury while colliding with center fielder Dexter Fowler in Arizona. Full story.

Newborns celebrate Cubs fever with Onesies

Talk about starting out on the right foot. Twins Alexander and Anthony Bruton from Round Lake Beach were born April 19 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, just as the Cubs' historic season was getting started. This month, parents Robert and Alma Bruton brought the new generation of fans to a Baby Homecoming at Condell, where they reconnected with nurses and physicians and were fitted with "Born to Fly the W" Cubs Onesies from Advocate. Retailers busier now with Cubs than after Stanley Cup win

During the Cubs-Dodgers series, sales at Clark Street Sports, with stores throughout the suburbs, jumped 10 times what they usually are in October. Now that the Cubs are in the World Series, sales have soared 20-fold, said Clark Street Sports co-owner Jason Caref. Full story.

Cook County could vote to raise minimum wage

Cook County could raise the minimum wage today, though it would take effect in the suburbs a year later than in Chicago. A county board committee Tuesday voted to ultimately increase the wage to $13 an hour, by July 2020, ABC 7 Chicago and the Chicago Tribune reported. The first increase to $10 an hour would take effect July 1, 2017. It would rise to $11 an hour in 2018 and $12 in 2019. Full story.

Boxes of Poplar Creek concert memorabilia up for sale

A former employee of the long-gone Poplar Creek Music Theater in Hoffman Estates recently unpacked a treasure trove of concert memorabilia - and he's selling all of it. Bill Kroupa, an Elgin native who worked security at the venue for its entire existence, unboxed hundreds of unworn concert T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, posters, photos and other merchandise from acts that performed at Poplar Creek, which was open from 1980 to 1994. 'El Barto's' admission to police in Naperville graffiti spree ruled inadmissible

A DuPage County judge ruled Tuesday that evidence in the case of a Naperville man accused of littering downtown Naperville with "Simpsons"-inspired graffiti was collected illegally and his subsequent statements to police should be thrown out. According to court documents, Judge Bruce Kelsey suppressed statements given by Joseph D'Auben implicating himself after his March 4, 2014, arrest at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. Full story.

St. Charles middle school evacuated for cooking oil fire

A cooking oil fire in the kitchen classroom caused a St. Charles middle school to be evacuated Tuesday morning. Nobody was injured when the overheated cooking oil caught fire in a pot just before noon at Thompson Middle School. Full story.
