Girls volleyball: Palatine outlasts Barrington in three sets

In a battle of Mid-Suburban West rivals, Palatine survived 15-25, 25-20, 27-25 over Barrington in the Class 4A Waukegan regional semifinal on Tuesday night.

The No. 4 seeded Pirates raised their record to 31-5 while No. 13 Barrington closed out at 15-21.

Palatine will face No. 5 Lakes on Thursday for the 6 p.m. championship.

Gabby Morris (10 kills, 2 aces), Andi Capel (9 kills, 6 aces), Peyton Tilly (8 kills), Cecilia Stack (5 kills) led the Fillies' attack while senior defensive specialist Erin Crowther had 10 digs and 5 aces.

Fremd d. Glenbrook North: No. 10 Fremd posted a 25-23, 25-14 win over No. 7 in the semifinals of the Evanston Class 4A regional. The Mid-Suburban League champs (27-8) will face No. 2 Hersey in Thursday's 6 p.m. title match, a rematch of the MSL championship last week.

Hersey d. Evanston: No. 2 Hersey improved to 27-9 with a 25-20 25-16 victory over No. 15 Evanston in the Class 4A Evanston regional semifinal.

The Huskies (27-9) will face No. 10 Fremd on Thursday night for the 6 p.m. championship.

Kati Kaburov (8 kills), Amy Morgan (6), Allie Jedd (50A and Mary Clare O'Shea (5) led the Huskies' attack set by Maggie Reisel (24 assists).

Reisel and Morgan each had 2 aces while Morgan (16 digs), Liz Solans (12) and Emma Frankiewicz (10) led the back row.

Prospect d Maine East: Mary Mazurek (6 kills), Maggie Porwit (5), Meghan Meredith (3) and Mandy Withey (2) led the attack for No. 6 Prospect in a 25-22, 26-24 victory over No. 11 Maine East at the Hoffman Estates Class 4A regional semifinal.

The Knights' hitters took their cues from setter Paige Gerber, who handed out 17 assists.

Kendra Gancarz served 3 aced for Prospect (25-11) which will face No. 3 Glenbrook South on Thursday for the 6:30 p.m. title.

Porwit also had 5 blocks while Withey and Meredith had 4.

Gancarz (13 digs) and Val Thomas (13) led the back row.

Wheeling d. Grayslake Central: Mid-Suburban League East co-champion Wheeling (24-12) posted a 18-25, 25-22, 25-22 triumph over No. 10 Grayslake Central in the semifinals of the Class 4A Buffalo Grove regional.

The No. 7 Wildcats will face No. 2 Stevenson for the 6 p.m. title on Thursday night.

Glenbrook South d Conant: No. 3 Glenbrook South survived No. 14 Conant 26-24, 25-22 in the semifinals of the Class 4A Hoffman Estates regional.

The Cougars, who won 6 matches last season, ended up with 16 this fall under third-year coach Drewann Pancratz.

Niles West d. Maine West: No. 5 Niles West topped the No. 12 Warriors (17-20) in their own Class 4A regional semifinal 25-23, 27-29, 25-12 in Des Plaines.

Leyden d Addison Trail: No. 12 Leyden posted a 9-25, 25-19, 25-21 victory over No. 5 Addison Trail in the semifinals of the Little Village (Chicago) regional and will face No. 4 Whitney Young in Thursday's 6 p.m. title.

St. Viator d. Lakeview: The Lions posted a 25-10, 25-10 triumph in the semifinals of the Regina Class 3A regional and will face the host and No. 6 Panthers for the championship at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Maine South d Rolling Meadows: No. 8 Maine South posted a 25-15, 20-25, 25-11 triumph over No. 9 Rolling Meadows (21-13-1) in the semifinals of the Mustangs' Class 4A regional.
