Girls tennis: Another big day for Stevenson; Antioch's Neville reaches semis

Stevenson's young doubles team keeps getting it done at state, and so do the Patriots.

And so does Antioch's Kelsey Neville.

Stevenson freshman Gina Kondos and sophomore Elizabeth Ferdman will play in the Class 2A quarterfinals at Buffalo Grove on Saturday against Glenbrook North's top-seeded Colette O'Regan and Catherine O'Regan. After a pair of dominant wins on Thursday, the Patriots' 5-8 seed picked up two more victories on Friday. Kondos/Ferdman rallied to beat Loyola's Caroline Witkowski/Maggie Hines 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, then captured a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hinsdale Central's Carolyn Ahn/Mira Amin.

Stevenson's Katherine Harvey and Paige Nierman, a 9-16 seed, are also still playing. The doubles team opened Friday by beating Libertyville's Danielle Blaser/Callie Klein 6-3, 6-4, before losing a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 decision in the fourth round to Hinsdale Central's second-seeded Erika Oku/Megan Guenther. At Hersey on Saturday, Harvey/Nierman will play Kamila Czosnyka/Marti Wind of Maine South.

While the freshman campaign of Stevenson's Athena Kolli ended on Thursday with a 1-2 day, Patriots senior Dhwani Kumar kept alive her season on Friday. She will play at Palatine against Glenbard West's Sienna Lopez after going 1-1 on Friday. Kumar lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Hinsdale Central's Olivia Oosterbaan but then prevailed 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 over Lane's Hallie Leblebijian.

Stevenson enters Saturday with in first place with 23 points, one more than Hinsdale Central. Lyons is third with 19 points.

In Class 1A, 3-4 seed Neville has Antioch in 10th place thanks to her 4 wins. The junior is in the semifinals and will play at Buffalo Grove on Saturday against top-seeded Madison Tattini of Bloomington Central Catholic.

Neville won a pair of straight-set decisions on Friday, as she topped Rockford Boylan's Natalie Muldowney (7-5, 6-2) and Benet Academy's Caroline Arnold (6-1, 6-0).

In Class 2A, Carmel Catholic's 5-8 seed Karina Falkstrom and Marie Kapelevich extended their season to Saturday as well. The double duo started Friday with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Whitney Young's Camryn Salter/Kara Barclay and then lost 6-0, 6-1 to Glenbrook North's O'Regans for their first loss. Falkstrom/Kapelevich will play at Hersey on Saturday against Loyola's Witkowski/Hines.

Grant senior Gaby Schoenberg will also play at Hersey on Saturday. The 9-16 seed rebounded from a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 loss to Niles North's Michelle Bacalla on Friday to post a pair of straight-set wins. Schoenberg (4-1 at state) will play Wheaton Warrenville South's Samantha Choi in the consolation round on Saturday.

Libertyville's Blaser/Klein, who went 2-0 on Thursday, lost 2 of 3 matches on Friday. After their loss to Stevenson's Harvey/Nierman, Blaser/Klein captured a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hanna Beck/Hannah Neuman of Neuqua Valley, before dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Glenbard West's Grace Giffin/Molly Rueth.

Wauconda junior Sarah Hackman went 3-2 in her third state meet. She started Friday by outlasting St. Ignatius Prep's Ivvy Hicks 5-7, 6-4, 13-11 in a consolation-bracket match, then lost 7-6 (0), 6-4 to Naperville Central's Jacquelyne Qi.

Mundelein sophomore Isabel Alviar and Warren freshman Sabrina Mella each lost their only match Friday, after both players went 2-1 on Thursday.

Also in Class 1A, Vernon Hills' Olivia Jazbutis and her teammates, doubles partners Kathy Chen/Leah Jacoby, saw their seasons end on Friday. Chen/Jacoby went 3-2 over two days.
