Halloween begins at the Bartlett Library

On Saturday, October 1, Bartlett Library patrons learned the ins and outs of making capes, masks and wings at the "Halloween Costume Workshop" program.

Professional Costume Designer Anna Glowacki shared tips and tricks for making homemade costumes.

Glowacki first focused on making a cape. She asked the patrons if there was a specific type of cape they wanted, to which they replied with "A scary one!"

She went to work on making a Dracula-esque cape, using long black fabric to create it. She also showed how to attach a collar to the creation.

Next was how to create a pair of fairy wings. For this, Glowacki cut the wings out of regular cardboard, putting holes near the center to put the elastic straps through. A tip she pointed out then was to make sure you cover the whole creation with fabric as both sides of the wings are shown.

Then came the demonstration on how to make masks. Glowacki showed off how to make a super hero mask, using stretchy and shiny material to do so.

Patrons had a good time talking about their previous sewing experiences, as well as asking Glowacki specific questions for costumes they were making.

An upcoming Adult Services program is "Mudslinging, Muckraking and Apple Pie: Presidential Campaigns, the Great America" on Thursday, October 13 at 7 p.m. Believe it or not, political campaigns have gotten more civil over the years. Don't believe it? In this program, hear the stories of the mudslinging and muckraking of the Jefferson v. Adams campaign of 1800, the Jackson v. Adams of 1828 and more. Also covered in this program is the 1912 campaign when Teddy Roosevelt decided to start his OWN political party.
