Endorsement: Cullerton in Senate District 23

Ask Republican Seth Lewis, as we did, how he differs from Democrat Thomas Cullerton on the issues in the Illinois Senate District 23 race, and you'll find he's hard pressed to find one.

Indeed, the candidates are quite alike. It would be nice if these two could be working together in Springfield to show how working across the aisle is done.

Alas, they are opponents and voters in a mostly northern DuPage County district that extends from Bartlett on the northwest (where Lewis lives) to Villa Park on the southeast (Cullerton's home) and many communities in between must choose one. We recommend the incumbent Cullerton.

The former Villa Park village president has shown a penchant for working with Republicans. His efforts, for example, to consolidate government in DuPage County was bipartisan. He opposes a tax increase, supports term limits for legislative leaders and supports efforts for a more fair way to redistrict. In a close call, Cullerton's experience locally and in Springfield in his first term earns him the nod over Lewis, a small-business owner as an insurance agent who also has an engineering background,
