Developer to convert South Bend rec center into winery
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A developer plans to spend up to $3 million convert a former recreation center in South Bend into a winery and culinary event center.
The South Bend Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2cEN3L7 ) developer Brad Emberton plans to include meeting space and a kitchen for use by food businesses, including food truck operators.
The city-owned building, formerly the Newman Recreation Center, has served as a National Guard armory, police firing range and public recreation center over the past century. Parks programming ceased there in 2011 because of maintenance issues, and the building has been vacant for the past two years.
The renovated building will include a 5,400-square-foot winery and tasting room along with a 16,200-square-foot culinary events center.
