Reid returns to lead New Zealand for US, Mexico games

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - West Ham defender Winston Reid will return to lead New Zealand in away football friendlies against Mexico and the United States next month.

Reid missed New Zealand's matches in the Oceania Nations Cup in June but was selected as captain of a 23-man squad announced by coach Anthony Hudson on Thursday. Leeds striker Chris Wood and Netherlands-based midfielder Ryan Thomas also rejoin the squad.

New Zealand will play Mexico in Nashville, Tennessee on Oct. 8 and the United States in Washington on Oct. 11.

The matches will help New Zealand prepare for the next stage of World Cup qualifying in November.

Hudson said "we have a strong squad barring one or two injuries and we are pleased to get them back together for two very good games."
