Bomb threats made against Long Grove schools

Authorities in Lake County are investigating bomb threats made Saturday against pair of Long Grove schools, as well as surrounding police departments.

Lake County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched about 2:19 a.m. Saturday to Country Meadows Elementary School, 6360 Gilmer Road, and Woodlawn Middle School, 6362 Gilmer Road, after a person called authorities stating he wanted to blow up both schools and police departments within a 50-mile radius, officials said.

Deputies searched both schools and the surrounding property and did not locate anything suspicious, sheriff's police said. The sheriff's office's bomb-detecting dog and his partner also searched the scene for explosives, but found nothing suspicious.

In a statement to parents Sunday, Kildeer Countryside School District 96 Superintendent Julie Schmidt said law enforcement has determined that there is no ongoing threat to the schools.

"I'm sharing this news to confirm the facts of this incident and to advise that our schools have been determined to be safe and will be open tomorrow," she said. "Law enforcement officials will be making themselves visible and readily available to us. However, I want to reiterate that law enforcement has determined that no ongoing threat exists."

The sheriff's Criminal Investigation Division is continuing to investigate the threat.
