Fort Wayne budget would add more than two-dozen new police

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - City officials in Fort Wayne are proposing a budget for 2017 that would include money to hire 28 new police officers.

Mayor Tom Henry said Thursday that the proposed $158 million budget is a sign that the city is moving in the right direction.

The additional 28 officers would in some cases replace officers expected to retire but some would add to the department's ranks. The department now has more than 440 officers and aims to have more than 460 by mid-2017.

The proposed budget also includes $23.8 million for street and sidewalk work and $7.7 million for maintenance at city parks.
