'No threat' after Wauconda High arrest

A Wauconda High School student was arrested Friday after sending a picture of a gun over social media, police said.

Wauconda police said the picture was obtained from the internet and sent to some classmates.

One of the classmates brought it to the attention of the school, police said.

Wauconda police Officer Heather Cognac said the school and the school resource officer investigated.

"There was no threat with it," she said. "It was just a picture. They did search the juvenile's home as a precautionary measure. Nothing was found, and the juvenile was charged with disorderly conduct."

Police were unable to say whether the student was a boy or a girl or disclose the age of the child.

Wauconda Unit District 118 officials alerted parents to the arrest in an email Friday afternoon.

Wauconda Unit District 118 Superintendent Dan Coles, in a message on the district's website, did not mention a picture.

He said, "Today, it came to the attention of the Wauconda High School Administration that an individual Wauconda High School student sent a message via social media that included threatening remarks."

He added, "Students who became aware of the threat reported it immediately to the Administration. The situation was investigated thoroughly by both the Wauconda Police Department and the Wauconda High School Administration and resulted in the individual student taken into police custody."

He continued, "As always, school counselors and administrators are available should your child or you wish to discuss this situation."

Wauconda High School students and alumni are celebrating homecoming this weekend. Coles said authorities have determined those events are safe to attend.

"Since some students were communicating about the threat that had occurred, we wanted everyone to know that the matter had been resolved and everyone was safe," Coles said in a follow-up interview.

He declined to comment further about the case.
