Police: Man jumps into Fox River during chase

A 28-year-old Oswego man jumped into the Fox River Tuesday morning to elude North Aurora police who were chasing him as part of an investigation into a suspicious vehicle, authorities said.

Police investigating recent vehicle burglaries said they observed the suspicious vehicle about 8:30 a.m. in an apartment complex parking lot near Butterfield Road and Laurel Drive. The driver walked away, but when he returned, he provided what officers believed to be a false name, according to a news release.

The man fled, leading officers on a foot chase down westbound Butterfield to the wooded area north of village hall, 25 E. State St., then north along the bike trail, police said.

That's where they lost sight of him, until an Aurora police officer spotted him in the Fox River just a few hundred feet north of the dam.

The man swam to shore and was pulled from the river by the Aurora cop, authorities said.

The suspect, Terence D. Evans, was charged with felony aggravated resisting police with bodily harm and misdemeanor obstructing identification. He was taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center for treatment, and then to the North Aurora Police Department, where he remains in custody.

One officer had nonlife-threatening injuries from the foot chase. He was still being treated at Presence Mercy as of Tuesday afternoon.

Police say Evans was wanted on outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrants for larceny, harassment by telephone and escape from a peace officer.

He is due in bond court Wednesday morning.
