Greenbelt Cultural Center hosts Fiestas Patrias celebration

Celebrate Mexican and Honduran Independence at Fiestas Patrias, a free family event from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Greenbelt Cultural Center, North Chicago.

Enjoy music, dance performances, and children's activities. Featured entertainers include Mariachi Juvenil Padre Cuevas, Marimba Honduras, Jorge Alcantar, Ballet Folklorico Erandi and Mariachi Estrellas.

There will be nature activities for children. Authentic foods and beverages will be available for purchase. The event is presented by the Lake County Forest Preserves.

Fiestas Patrias commemorates Father Miguel Hidalgo's cry for independence from Spain on Sept. 16, 1810, and is celebrated in Mexico like the Fourth of July is celebrated in the United States.

The Greenbelt Cultural Center is at 1215 Green Bay Road, south of Belvidere Road, in North Chicago.
