Cuneo Mansion to offer tours, talk on Columbia Exposition

Submitted by Loyola University Chicago

Loyola University Chicago invites the public to Cuneo Mansion and Gardens for a sneak peek of ongoing restoration projects and self-guided tours from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays Sept. 10 and 24, Oct. 8 and 22 and Nov. 5 and 19. Property manager Lisa Cushing-Davis will be on hand to brief visitors on the work that Loyola has accomplished and what remains to be done.

Other events planned at the Cuneo Mansion include:

• "The Columbian Exposition and the Birth of Consumer Culture" from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. Presented by Dr. Theodore Karamanski. In 1893 at the height of the "Gilded Age" Chicago hosted the world in a celebration of American "progress" since the discovery of the New World. The great World's Fair had a major impact on the landscape of Chicago and laid the foundation for modern consumer culture through products and services that remain part of life today.

• "Calling Cards and Pretty Posies" from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. Presented by Dr. Lisa Cushing-Davis. During the Victorian and Edwardian periods, calling cards and "posies," small bouquets given to women by men, spoke volumes without a word ever being uttered. Join Dr. Cushing-Davis to explore these cultural practices and find out just what that last bouquet you received really meant.

• "Lightning Strikes: Tesla, Creativity, and the Soul of Innovation" from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Presented by John Wasik. Based on his upcoming book "Lightning Strikes," Wasik will use the life and inventions of inventor Nikola Tesla as a lens to show how to spark creativity and innovation. Wasik tells the compelling story of how Tesla created radio, the modern electrical grid, robotics and wireless/remote control. Tesla was a friend of Samuel Insull, the builder of the mansion. Wasik explores the relationship between these two men, beginning with their meeting in Thomas Edison's office in the 1880s, to their letters toward the end of Insull's life in the mid-1930s.

All events are free to attend; no advance registration required. Lectures will be held in the Cuneo pavilion ballroom. Cuneo Mansion and Gardens is at 1350 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills. Call (847) 362-3042 or email cuneomansion@luc.edu.
