Palermo appoints De Zerbi as coach after Ballardini quits

PALERMO, Sicily (AP) - Palermo has appointed Roberto De Zerbi as its new coach following the resignation of Davide Ballardini just two matches into the Serie A season.

The 37-year-old De Zerbi's first match in charge will be at home on Saturday against Napoli.

De Zerbi had been in charge of Foggia for the past two seasons but parted from the third-division club last month after disagreements.

He steered Foggia to the Lega Pro Italian Cup and almost earned promotion to Serie B but lost in the playoff final to Pisa.

Ballardini saved Palermo from relegation in May after being rehired for a second stint, in a season which saw nine coaching changes at the club.

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has made almost 60 coaching changes in 29 years as club owner.
