Philly G's restaurant in Vernon Hills closes after 11 years

Philly G's restaurant has ceased operations in Vernon Hills after 11 years.

The Italian eatery, at 1252 E. Route 45, served its last meal Saturday, co-owner Phil Gilardi said.

Philly G's formerly had been known as Gilardi's, back when Phil Gilardi's father ran it.

The original restaurant opened in 1985. The younger Gilardi took over and renamed it in 2005, teaming with his wife, Tina, and an uncle, Dan Sullivan.

"It was a place my family grew up in," he said.

Gilardi said the restaurant's end has been coming for some time but declined to elaborate.

He thanked his customers for "30 years of loyal patronage."

"It was a good run," Gilardi said.

The building is for sale.

Phil and Tina Gilardi also own two restaurants in Mundelein, Tina G's and Tavern on 60.
