Warren Blue Devils (0-1) at New Trier Trevians (1-0) When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Warren lost to Lyons, 19-7; New Trier def. York, 14-10.

Skinny: Turnovers hurt Warren last week. The Blue Devils gave the ball away five times, four times on interceptions by quarterback Luke Schmitt. "I'm very pleased with Luke, and I know that sounds odd right now," McNulty said after the game. "But I thought that kid competed. He did the best he could. We've just got to put him in better positions." The Blue Devils would also like to get star wide receivers Jalin Tolbert and Micah Jones more involved. The two combined for only 8 catches … New Trier running back Francis Fay scored New Trier's game-winning touchdown and had 138 total yards of offense last week against York.

Lake Zurich Bears (1-0) at Montini Broncos (0-1)When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Lake Zurich def. Fremd, 19-15; Montini lost to Maine South, 44-13.

Skinny: It was the Lewandowski and Stutzman show for Lake Zurich last week. Quarterback Evan Lewandowski connected with Joey Stutzman for 2 touchdowns in Lake Zurich's first run with its new spread offense. The two hooked up for touchdowns of 61 and 36 yards … Montini, which won the Class 6A state championship last year and has won state championships in five of the last seven years, opened with a rare loss. The Broncos were without Western Michigan recruit Prince Walker, who was out with a strained left quad. Meanwhile, junior quarterback Brad Norgle was starting his first game for the Broncos. Running back Will Smith Jr. carried Montini with 180 yards on 14 carries.

Batavia Bulldogs (1-0) at Libertyville Wildcats (1-0)When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Batavia def. Belleville West, 34-24; Libertyville def. Elk Grove, 29-0.

Skinny: Libertyville's defense was the star of the show last week against Elk Grove, allowing just 36 yards of total offense. The Wildcats also forced 4 fumbles and rung up 4 sacks. After scoring just 6 points in the first half (on 2 field goals), the Libertyville offense kicked into high gear with a 16-point third quarter. Quarterback Jack Ruskell connected with Brandon Rule for 2 touchdowns, of 34 and 21 yards … Batavia rolled up 360 of its 410 total yards last week on the ground behind a big, senior-laden offensive line. Reggie Phillips was the Bulldogs' leading rusher with 140 yards on 22 carries.

Stevenson Patriots (0-1) at Muskegon Big Reds (1-0)When: 4:30 p.m., Saturday

Last week: Stevenson lost to Palatine, 28-20; Muskegon def. Ann Arbor Pioneer, 51-14

Skinny: After taking a 20-14 lead into the halftime locker room, Stevenson was shut out in the second half last week and was dealt a loss. The Patriots were turned away in the red zone three times in the second half. Quarterback Aiden O'Connell got off to a good start, with 2 first-half touchdown passes, to Noah Lukz and Michael Marchese … Muskegon was up 44-0 by halftime last week. Virginia Tech commit Kalil Pimpleton scored five touchdowns to lead the Big Reds, including two passing, two rushing and one receiving. He finished with 260 total yards of offense.

Elgin Maroons (0-1) at Mundelein Mustangs (0-1)When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Elgin lost to Aurora East, 26-22; Mundelein lost to Larkin, 32-26.

Skinny: Mundelein got the Elgin sweep last year, defeating both Larkin and Elgin over the first two weeks of the season for its first 2-0 start in years. The Mustangs weren't able to make it two wins in a row over Larkin. Mundelein tied the game at 26-26 in the fourth quarter last week, but couldn't come up with enough defense to prevent Larkin's answer: a go-ahead touchdown. Aaron Woolford scored 2 touchdowns for Mundelein … Elgin had victory literally ripped from its grasp last week, up 22-18 and in possession of the ball with 21.2 seconds left. But the East Aurora defense ripped the ball away on an Elgin rushing play and raced 96 yards in the other direction for a game-winning touchdown.

Antioch Sequoits (1-0) at Moline Maroons (0-1)When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Antioch def. Kenosha Tremper, 59-33; Moline lost to DeKalb, 40-12.

Skinny: Antioch had an offensive outburst in its season opener, doing most of its damage on the ground. Running back Brandon Lind rolled up 6 touchdowns on 12 carries for Antioch, and totaled 83 yards in the process. "We did a great job running the ball and played really well for our first game," Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said. "We have a really good offensive line this year, one of the biggest we've had since I've been here. We've got some size with some 300-pounders that a Class 7A or 8A school might have. They made some great holes last week. We had a lot of really good movement up front."…A near-4-hour bus ride precedes Antioch's game this week in Moline, and then the challenge gets only tougher from there. "Moline has some big strong boys on that team," Glashagel said. "Last year, they were the same way. I remember they got off their bus and we thought we were looking at a college team."

Grant Bulldogs (0-1) at Glenbrook North Spartans (1-0)When: 7 p.m., today

Last week: Grant lost to Crystal Lake Central, 42-7; Glenbrook North def. Wheeling, 45-29.

Skinny: Grant looks to get its offense going after starting with a sputter last week against Crystal Lake Central. The Bulldogs' only score was a special teams' touchdown, an 85-yard kickoff return by Isaac Jaime. Grant tallied just 5 first downs and 83 yards on the game … Glenbrook North was up 21-0 by the second quarter last week against Wheeling. Defensively, the Spartans were stingy, allowing just 7 points for Wheeling through the first three quarters. Glenbrook North quarterback Kevin Burnside was efficient, completing 15-of-20 passes for 237 yards.

Grayslake Central Rams (0-1) at Deerfield Warriors (1-0)When: 7:15 p.m., today

Last week: Grayslake Central lost to Vernon Hills, 39-16; Deerfield def. Lakes, 27-20.

Skinny: The drought continues for Grayslake Central. The Rams haven't experienced a win since the 2013 season, and are coming off of back-to-back 0-9 seasons. Grayslake Central scored all 16 of their points last week in the fourth quarter. Mikey Andrews finished with 22 carries and 101 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown. Quarterback Sam Lennartz hit Michael Przybylski for a 26-yard pass reception for the other score in the fourth quarter. "I saw a lot of positives out there," Grayslake Central coach Jason Schaal said. "Some things we have to work on. We've got 58 guys on our varsity roster, 47 of them getting their first varsity experience." … Deerfield won a thriller against Lakes, making a big red zone stand at the 3-yard line with 10 seconds left in the game. Quarterback Jonah Silverglade completed 7-of-10 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns and Charles Jones hauled in 3 passes for 74 yards. He had 1 receiving touchdown and 1 rushing touchdown.

Grayslake North Knights (1-0) at Sycamore Spartans (0-1) When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Grayslake North def. Willowbrook, 27-12; Sycamore lost to Sterling, 38-6.

Skinny: Grayslake North senior quarterback Hunter Ambre made a splash in his first varsity start. He was efficient and competed 9-of-17 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown last week. His play helped the Knights get by without star running back Dami Oladunmoye, who sat out to continue healing from the ankle sprain he suffered while playing lacrosse over the summer. Oladunmoye has committed to play lacrosse at Syracuse next year. There were also defensive highlights for Grayslake North, which got 3 interceptions, including a 40-yard touchdown return, out of sophomore safety Adam George … Sycamore scored on its first possession of last week's game and never again. Quarterback Ty Sulaver connected with Jordan Tolzin for a 46-yard touchdown reception.

Highland Park Giants (1-0) at Lakes Eagles (0-1)When: 7:15 p.m., today

Last week: Highland Park def. Hersey, 40-18; Lakes lost to Deerfield, 27-20.

Skinny: It was a tough one for Lakes to swallow last week. The Eagles were just a play away from forcing overtime. But with 10 seconds left, Deerfield denied them end zone from just 3 yards out. "We let one get away," Lakes coach Luke Mertens said. "We did a nice job on that last drive. We moved the ball 70 yards to get in a position to score. I thought our quarterback (Brandon Khan) showed a lot of poise under pressure to get us there. He kept his composure and had good pocket presence." Khan finished with 14 completions on 24 attempts and had 148 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ryan Selig caught 8 of those passes for 55 yards. Just before halftime, star Lakes running back Cameron Ruiz cramped up and was sidelined for precautionary reasons for the rest of the game. Lakes took a 20-7 lead into the break, but the loss of Ruiz seemed to stick with the Eagles in the second half. "We had a few starters get hurt early," Mertens said. "I think that kind of took the wind out of our sails."…Running back D.J. Penick had a big season opener for Highland Park. Against Hersey, he rolled up 160 yards and 4 touchdowns, including a score that went for 53 yards.

Woodstock North Thunder (1-0) at Round Lake Panthers (0-1)When: 7:15 p.m., today

Last week: Woodstock North def. Chicago Noble, 66-0; Round Lake lost to Woodstock, 24-8.

Skinny: Round Lake had trouble getting its offense going. The Panthers didn't score until the fourth quarter. Quarterback Tabieas Young threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to finally put Round Lake on the board. He completed 6-of-19 passes for 82 yards…Woodstock North was dominant on defense last week and senior Colin Ritter broke the school record for most interceptions in one game. He had 3 interceptions in the second half. Quarterback Matt Zinnen anchored an offense that had its way against Noble.

Wauconda Bulldogs (1-0) at Riverside-Brookfield Bulldogs (1-0)When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Wauconda def. Richmond-Burton, 21-7; Riverside-Brookfield def. Morton, 34-12.

Skinny: Wauconda has never been shy about passing the ball in recent years. But last week, the Bulldogs passed the ball only 3 times..not because they couldn't, but because they didn't have to. Wauconda's rushing game was particularly efficient. Running back Jacob Bicknase rolled up 178 yards and scored 2 touchdowns to lead Wauconda, which also got some big carries out of Tyler Stankiewicz. He finished with more than 50 yards while also anchoring the defense at linebacker. "We just did a really nice job of running the ball," Wauconda coach Dave Mills said. "It helps when you have experienced running backs (such as Bicknase and Stankiewicz). We were able to take what the defense was giving us."…Riverside-Brookfield is coming off a 10-2 season last year. "That is a fast, physical team," Mills said of Riverside-Brookfield. "They are like us in that they are a little inexperienced. They have only 7 of 22 starters back. But also like us, they've had some kids step in and do really well."

Zion-Benton Zee-Bees (1-0) at Vernon Hills Cougars (1-0)When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Zion-Benton def. Westosha Central, 31-14; Vernon Hills def. Grayslake Central, 39-16.

Skinny: Even without starting quarterback Kyle Hull, who sat out the season opener due to a team decision, Vernon Hills still rolled it up on Grayslake Central. Backup quarterback Jack Himel seemed pretty comfortable, completing 21-of-28 passes for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns. Vernon Hills was up 22-0 by halftime. "That's what we wanted to do, to get that quick start," Vernon Hills coach Bill Bellecomo said. "It takes a lot of pressure off your defense and your offense."…This is the first meeting between Vernon Hills and Zion-Benton. Last year Vernon Hills went 6-4 while Zion-Benton finished 3-6 under head coach Bob Moynihan.

DeKalb Barbs (1-0) at Carmel Corsairs (1-0) When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: DeKalb def. Moline 40-12; Carmel def. Waukesha West, 24-17.

Skinny: Carmel turned a 14-3 halftime deficit into a big nonconference win in the season opener last week. Running back Rondel Jamison had a big second half to fuel the comeback. He finished with 155 yards on 19 carries. And he scored a touchdown five minutes into the second half to give Carmel momentum. It was one of 3 touchdowns (including a 45-yarder) for Jamison. "Rondel Jamison is the best player in Lake County, that is all I can say," Carmel coach Andy Bitto said…DeKalb quarterback Derek Kyler will look to star wide receiver and Northern Illinois recruit Cole Tucker. They connected on a 35-yard touchdown last week. The Barbs had more than 400 yards of total offense against Moline.
