Cubs hang on to sweep Pirates

A bounce-back performance by pitcher Jason Hammel, home run No. 36 of the year by slugger Kris Bryant, and a spectacular sliding catch by shortstop Addison Russell helped the Cubs to a 6-5 victory Wednesday night over the Pittsburgh Pirates to complete a three-game sweep. Activists rally for investigation into Palatine family's deportation

Chanting "Investigate ICE," advocates for immigrants on Wednesday called for return of members of a Palatine family and for scrutiny of federal agents' actions in deporting them. Reynold Garcia was apprehended Jan. 3 after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents lured him from his Schaumburg church by pretending his friend was in a car accident. Full story.

Shooter convicted in Aurora killing

A Kane County jury on Wednesday convicted a 21-year-old man from Joliet of shooting and killing an Aurora man in January 2014 during a drug deal. In addition to first-degree murder, jurors found Dimitri Green-Hosey guilty of armed robbery and determined he fired the shot that killed Arin Williams, 20, at a near-west side Mexican restaurant. Loaded gun found in teen's backpack, Elgin police say

A 17-year-old from Elgin was arrested after police found a loaded handgun in his backpack, authorities said Wednesday. Elgin police had been conducting a firearms investigation at 5 p.m. Tuesday on the 400 block of Villa Street. Full story.

  DePaul University announced Wednesday it plans to close its Naperville campus. Provost Marten denBoer said in an email to faculty that DePaul will not renew its lease for shared space along the I-88 corridor and that classes won't be scheduled there after the spring 2017 quarter. DePaul's Naperville campus to close next summer

DePaul University will close its 20-year-old Naperville campus next summer because of declining enrollment. At its peak in fall 1999, the Catholic university's satellite location at 150 W. Warrenville Road taught students taking more than 24,600 credit hours. But by last fall, that total had dropped to 700 credit hours. Full story.
