Pirates send LHP Lobstein to Orioles for LHP Phillips

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded left-hander Kyle Lobstein to the Baltimore Orioles for lefty Zach Phillips.

The deal was announced Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Lobstein was 2-0 with a 3.96 ERA in 14 games as a reliever for Pittsburgh this season. The Pirates designated him for assignment on Tuesday. He will primarily be used by the Orioles against left-handers, who have batted .083 against him this season.

Lobstein was a combined 4-10 with a 5.33 ERA in 20 games for Detroit the previous two years, mostly as a starter.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated left-hander Ashur Tolliver for assignment.

Phillips made his big league debut with the Orioles in 2011. He also pitched for Baltimore in 2012 and the Marlins in 2013.

The 29-year-old Phillips was 9-3 with one save and a 4.45 ERA in 49 relief appearances for Triple-A Norfolk this season. He will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
