Chicago's Venetian Night boat parade canceled

CHICAGO (AP) - A lakefront parade of decorated boats in Chicago has been canceled, but a fireworks show will still go on.

Navy Pier officials say fewer than 20 boats were signed up to participate in the Venetian Night parade this year.

Spokesman Jon Kaplan tells the Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/2c4J4Vy) the parade was usually held in June or July but was pushed back to September because of Navy Pier centennial events. The date change may have discouraged participation.

A fireworks display planned for Sept. 10 will be renamed "Fall for Fireworks."

Navy Pier officials say they may revive the Venetian Night boat parade next year if there's interest. The Chicago Yachting Association started the parade more than 50 years ago and has collaborated with Navy Pier on the event since 2013.
